Obama: Same old defeatist...

Obama Ridicules Cheney's Iraq Comments [1]

Yes, well. The headline is just the same old AP we have grown to hate.

"Now, keep in mind, this is the same guy that said we'd be greeted as liberators, the same guy that said that we're in the last throes. I'm sure he forecast sun today," Obama said to laughter from supporters holding campaign signs over their heads to keep dry. "When Dick Cheney says it's a good thing, you know that you've probably got some big problems."

Fair weather friends?

Seriously, if anyone thinks of Obama or any Democrat is not a defeatist and isolationist, then I have some prime swamp land for sale.

Meet me at low tide...

Delaware Governor commits faux pas

Global warming comments earn state climatologist a rebuke from the Governor [1]
Delaware’s climatologist has received a rebuke from the Governor after he used his title in a report on global warming that are not the same as the view of the Minner administration. The governor told David Legates that future statements on pubic policy matters should be issued on his own behalf or the university’s. Legates is a geography professor at the University of Delaware and has been skeptical about claims that human activities are causing climate changes. Last year, identifying himself as the state climatologist, he co-wrote a friend-of-the-court brief opposing a lawsuit filed by Delaware and other states to force federal regulation of greenhouse gases.

I think the Governor should set politics aside and respect the opinion of his climatologist.

Denmark chastizes EU defense ministers

Minister lambastes Nato allies [link]

The the majority of defense ministers of NATO member states, meeting in Seville, refused to send more troops to Afghanistan. One exception was Denmark:

Denmark's defence minister, Søren Gade, was one of the few who supported a proposal to strengthen Nato forces in the Asian country. He expressed concern that not stepping up the war effort there may turn the tide in favour of the Taliban.

There are 35 000 NATO troops currently in Afghanistan.

In addition to the Americans, soldiers from Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada and the UK are currently stationed in the dangerous southern half of Afghanistan, while Germany and other countries are operating in the north.

It should be easy for Hamid Karzai to see who he can count on for support.

A climatologist's take on IPPC

Canadian climatologist Timothy Ball isn't afraid to speak out on the IPCC's latest report on climate change. A reporter for The Daily Tribune News of Cartersville, GA, spoke with Ball by phone:

Q: The mainstream media would have us believe that the science of global warming is now settled by the latest IPCC report. Is it true? A: No. It's absolutely false. As soon as people start saying something's settled, it's usually that they don't want to talk about it anymore. They don't want anybody to dig any deeper. It's very, very far from settled. In fact, that's the real problem. We haven't been able to get all of the facts on the table. The IPCC is a purely political setup. There was a large group of people, the political people, who wanted the report to be more harum-scarum than it actually is. In fact, the report is quite a considerable step down from the previous reports. For example, they have reduced the potential temperature rise and they've reduced the sea level increase and a whole bunch of other things. Part of it is because they know so many people will be watching the report this time.

The Climate Code on TWC

Yesterday, I took the time to watch The Climate Code on The Weather Channel. This program is put forward as a show about the science of climate change.

As they say, "Nothing could be further."

The show consisted of a few interviews with people who made declarative statements about weather or the impact of potential governmental policy as though they were accepted fact. A significant segment was devoted to drawing a parallel between global-warming skeptics and smoking-causes-cancer skeptics of a few years ago. But, most of all, there was no focus on any one element of the "science" behind climate change the program claims to explain.

It is painfully obvious The Climate Code is more about advocacy of a viewpoint and less about climatology.

The border fence

Mexican, U.S. Mayors Blast Border Fence [1]
The mayors of Eagle Pass, Texas, and Ciudad Acuna and Piedras Negras, both in the Mexican state of Coahuila, signed a document declaring the U.S.-Mexico border an area for union and solidarity — not division.
"From El Paso to Brownsville, Texas, we're against building the wall. ... That's why we're here today to support our neighbors," Eagle Pass Mayor Chad Foster said

I have a great idea that ought to make the Texas mayors happy: We will build the fence so that they are on the Mexican side.

Great bipartisan idea, eh?

News from the Front

Presented as a counterweight to MSM negativity

Iraq Situation 'Winnable,' Official Says [1]
WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2007 – While the situation in Iraq is challenging, it is “winnable,” U.S. Navy Rear Adml. Mark Fox told a group of online journalists and bloggers yesterday during an operational update by telephone.

Here are a few key points of Adml. Fox' remarks:

  • “I draw hope from the fact that we are joined, not opposed, by the overwhelming majority of the Iraqi people in this struggle,” Fox said. “In polling conducted in November, 89 percent of Iraqis nationwide agreed with the statement: ‘My first loyalty is to my country rather than my sect, ethnic group, or tribe.’”
  • In December, 1,115 Iraqi men signed up to join the Police Forces. “To put this in context,” Fox said, “eight months ago we had zero recruits from Ramadi. In one month, over 600 tribesmen in Ramadi alone qualified for enlistment."
  • “Each time I travel outside the International Zone, I’m amazed that virtually every house in Baghdad has a satellite dish on the roof,” he said. “While everybody focuses on the violence in Baghdad, rural Iraq has experienced a post-Saddam boom that is employing and putting cash in the pockets of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi families.”
  • Fox attended a city council meeting in Fallujah that he described as raucous and disorganized. He said council members had some significant points of contention. “But it demonstrated even if the Iraqis are not at the levels of Jeffersonian democracy yet, they are eager to find solutions to their problems.”
