More on Putin's Character

Russian leaders have long harbored dark suspicions about others' motivations.  Remember Stalin and his purges?  Seems Putin has that same character flaw [1]:

Russia's powerful Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said in a CNN interview he suspected someone in the United States provoked the Georgia conflict to make the situation more tense and create "a competitive advantage for one of the candidates fighting for the post of U.S. president." He did not elaborate.

On Putin's Character

Given today's news, I am taken by President Bush's estimate of Vladimir Putin:

At the end of their first summit meeting in Slovenia Mr Bush described Mr Putin as a straightforward and trustworthy man [1].

Evidently Putin managed to mask his true character; a character formed by his long service in the secret police.  That plus Russia's long history of autocratic rule gives insight to Putin's character.
